It was dangerous being in the Continental Army, no question. But the British were far from the deadliest threat to the soldiers of the American Revolution. The worst killer facing the troops was smallpox. Smallpox swept through both Continental and British forces. But it affected the Continental troops much more than the British, who tended to be immune, due to inoculation or previous exposure to the disease, and who were quick to inoculate all soldiers when the smallpox epidemic spread. But Washington initially was loath to have the Continental troops inoculated, not wanting to risk having soldiers unable to fight for the time after being inoculated. So smallpox mowed down the troops. As the smallpox epidemic showed no signs of slowing (it lasted from 1775 to 1782), ultimately, Washington decided to opt for what became the first mass immunization policy in American history.
